Firefox + Cliqz Search Collaboration

Cliqz is a privacy-focused browser-based mainly in Germany. The Cliqz browser does something different that no other browser does. They surface search results directly in their search dropdown. This equals one less navigation step for the user. They no longer need to visit a search engine to arrive at their wanted destination.

Partnering with Cliqz we worked to explore how this could potentially fit into the Firefox ecosystem.

We also explored the use case for information that is deliverable directly in the search dropdown without needing to visit a website. Examples of this use case include weather, movie information, images, calculations, conversions, flight information, maps, etc.

I took part in a user research field study that was conducted in Germany. The study helped us understand how users understood the Cliqz browsing experience. Having the opportunities to see users interacting with the product in their home settings was very eye-opening. The parts of the UX you may think are troublesome sometimes turn out to be easily understood, while parts you expect users to breeze through end up causing the most friction. For example, I wasn't expecting sight typing to be a huge concern. But when users look at their hands when typing they end up missing the search results that are surfacing in the dropdown. This paired with the muscle memory of pressing the enter key after typing a search query meant that users missed the search dropdown results entirely!

Synthesis of user testing
Ideation
Once the designs were ready and implemented we put them into Test Pilot - A testing platform at Firefox where users have the option to install experiments we were trying out. If a feature tests positively then it 'graduates' into Firefox Release. Unfortunately, the new search experience did not make it into Firefox release.

The work we accomplished did not go to waste, it can now be seen in the Cliqz Browser (with some tweaks to match the visual styling of the browser).
